STEM EDUCATION: Why is STEM EDUCATION Important to US Competitiveness?

Being known as the world’s most powerful and most competitive among nations, STEM education is very important for maintaining American leadership and successfully competing with the rapidly growing economies of Asia. As found in the recent report,   Rising Tigers,  Sleeping Giant, “  Asian nations like China, South Korea, and Japan are launching massive government investment projects to dominate the clean-tech sector, which promises to be one of the largest new growth sectors of the next few decades.
In order to catch up, the United States will need a national clean-tech education strategy as what the Obama Administration’s RE-ENERGYSE was step in the right direction. And in order to maintain America’s competitiveness, we really need to educate students today especially in math, science, technology, and engineering.

March 11, 2012 Inquiry Project: Importance of STEM Education

STEM EDUCATION: When is the right time/age to incorporate STEM Education?

In February 2010, as part of a growing national effort to raise awareness of the need to better prepare the next generation to compete globally, the National Academy of Engineering hosted a conference entitled STEM Summit 2010. The Summit - which was sponsored by the Samueli Foundation and the
Children and Families Commission of Orange County - brought together leading national experts in education and early childhood development to discuss the importance of incorportiond STEM education at the earliest possible point in child's life.

As a follow up to the Summit, the Commission and the Samueli Foundation have created " The STEM Lab Report " which is a monthly series article and other media that shares research, insight and expertise and the critical importance of STEM education in early learning.

To view the October 2011 STEM Lab Report Newsletter, please click here.
Furthermore, according to Lesli Rotenberg, senior vice president, Children’s Media, PBS, " Years ago, we identified a gap in children's media - there was very little content available for kids to build critical literacy and STEM skills - especially on  TV. " We saw this opportunity to develop great narratives grounded in core curricular areas. Since then, we've worked with the best producers in children's programming to develop a lineup of preschool series that meet this need. And we're seeing great results - it's clear from our ratings that kids are responding to this content.
As well they should. It is obvious from this data that parents have realized the need from the improvement of their children's STEM education, beginning at an earlier age, and steem PBS as a realiable source of that for their preschoolers. Experts do in fact state that " strong elementary ,math skills are important if students hope to succeed in later grades and beyond - and because a mastery of each new math concept relies on an understanding of prior concepts, success must start at an early age ( ital. added )."

Inquiry Project: STEM Literacy

STEM (a)

Inquiry Project

What is STEM and why it is important in education?

Stem as everyone knows that it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. As the world becomes increasingly technological, the value of national assets will be determined by the effectiveness of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Stem education will determine whether we will be able to solve immense challenges in such areas as energy, health, environmental protection and national security. It will help produce the capable and flexible workforce needed to compete in a global marketplace. It will ensure our society continues to make fundamental discoveries and to advance our understanding of ourselves, our planet and universe.

Furthermore, with the help of STEM education, it will continue to generate scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians who will create the new ideas, new products, and entirely new industries of the 21st century. It will provide the technical skills and quantitative literacy needed for individuals to earn livable wages and make better decisions for themselves, their families and their communities. And it will strenghten our democracy by preparing our citizens to make informed choices in an increasingly technological world.
